"Straight Outta Compton" actor Keith Stanfield has been added to the Adam Wingard Netflix adaptation of the popular manga "Death Note," reports Variety. Stanfield will appear opposite Margaret Qualley and Nat Wolff in the coming movie. TheWrap first reported that the streaming service was eyeing Stanfield for a role and sources now reveal that the actor has closed a deal to join the movie.
Stanfield had a breakout performance in "Short Term 12" opposite Brie Larson and most recently delivered a knock out performance as Snoop Dogg in "Straight Outta Compton."
According to Variety, "Wolff plays a student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone simply by writing the victim’s name. A cat-and-mouse game ensues when he’s tracked by a reclusive police officer."
The manga, created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, tells the story of Light Yagami as an ace student with great prospects. While all is great in Light's life, he is bored out of his mind but all that changes when he finds the Death Note. This mythical book, dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god, kills any human whose name is written in the notebook and Light has vowed to rid the world of evil. But will Light achieve his goal or turn into the very thing he hopes to rid the world of?
Jeremy Slater wrote the screenplay for "Death Note," and Wingard will direct. This will be the fourth adaptation of the manga out as there was an anime, plus a live-action adaptation in Japan that garnished a sequel.
Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka are producing "Death Note," while Doug Davison and Brian Witten are serving as executive producers.
Netflix recently acquired the project, after Warner Bros.’ rights expired, and plans to start shooting this summer.
