The Golden State Warriors have three of the best shooters that the NBA has right now in Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins. But before them, the Dubs also had three iconic names most refer to as “Run TMC.”
“Run TMC” refers to three NBA greats – Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin. One former NBA player who got to play with them is Paul Mokeski back in 1991.
The 62-year-old has fond memories of that team that advanced to the NBA playoffs at that time and even upset the San Antonio Spurs in the first round in four games. This was despite the Warriors dropping game one of that series.
Although the Warriors, then coached by Don Nelson was oozing with firepower, their lack of defense was notable.
That said, Mokeski was asked by this writer when he appeared on the Sports For All PH podcast hosted by Vincent Juico an interesting question. Who would win if Curry, Thompson and Wiggins faced a prime Hardaway, Richmond and Mullins?
“I would pick Curry, Thompson and Wiggins in a shooting contest. I would pick ‘Run TMC’ if they played three-on-three,” the 42nd overall pick of the 1979 NBA Draft said.
Mokeski then shared how he first saw Curry and knew he was a special player when he was still a coach in Charlotte. He also hailed Thompson for being one of the best shooters ever and also added that Wiggins is a good player.
“His dad was on our staff, so he was in our practice gym all the time before our practice, shooting. I knew he was a special player. And he can shoot crazy, deep, quick, release,” Mokeski recalled. “Klay Thompson, one of the best shooters ever, Andrew Wiggins is a really good player,” he added.
The California native would then explain why he believes “Run TMC” would win in a game of three-on-three over Curry, Thompson and Wiggins.
“The one thing that Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullins have over them is toughness and competitiveness. And they will find a way to win. Whether it’s a Tim Hardaway crossover, a Mullin left-handed fade-away or Mitch Richmond punishing Wiggins in the post,” Mokeski explained.
It was a question that piqued Mokeski’s interest, admitting seeing the two generations collide would be something.
“I would pay big money to see that, even today,” he said.
