The Dallas Mavericks need tough men upfront and Montrezl Harrell looms as an intriguing option. The 26-year-old becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason and the Los Angeles Clippers know re-signing Harrell will not be easy.
As early as now, there are several teams interested in the services of the 6-foot-7 big man. According to Sam Amico of Sports Illustrated, clubs who may covet Harrell include the Mavericks, New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls and the Toronto Raptors.
Given that the Mavs have enough firepower anchored on Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis, the immediate need of head coach Rick Carlisle is a role player who will do the dirty work. For those who have followed the career of Harrell with the Clippers, this needs no elaboration.
Better yet, Harrell can do more than just defend and the tough job. Last season, the second-round pick from the 2015 NBA Draft averaged 18.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 blocks in 63 games per Basketball-Reference. He is a scrappy player that could fit in well with the Mavericks next season.
As mentioned in a previous post, Harrell and the Clippers do have a mutual interest to hook up again. However, most know that all is not well within the team. There is growing tension and one instance singled out was during Game 2 of the Clippers series with the Denver Nuggets. Harrell got into it with Paul George and there remains no clarity if this has been completely settled.
For Harrell, the logical move is to join a contender. From the list of teams suggested by Amico, the Mavericks and the Raptors are plausible destinations aside from the Clippers. Considering he is coming off a season where his club was touted to make a run at the NBA title, it would be strange to see the center-forward join a rebuilding team. The money offered could play a factor but that means Harrell would have to expand his patience and lower expectations.
With the 2019-20 NBA season still ongoing, Harrell could use the time to explore options. Offers are expected to come in once the offseason officially starts. From there, Harrell will need to check out the offers and figure out what is best for him moving forward.
