Carmelo Anthony proved to one and all that he can still play ball last season when he played for the Portland Trail Blazers. Currently a free agent, the 10-time All-Star is looking forward to playing more NBA ball. His next stint could be with the same team he suited up for from 2011 to 2017.
Pundit is monitoring the Carmelo Anthony situation and most see him rejoining the New York Knicks. This buzz has been around for quite some time now but with the free agency window opening on Nov. 20, something may be done.
According to Ian Begley of SNY, he feels there is mutual interest between the Knicks and Anthony. It has been discussed for quite a while now and most teams are expecting it to go down.
Though there is not enough to support this claim, it is a big possibility. That is unless some other team comes knocking on the 36-year-old’s door.
Assuming that both sides do end up talking, it would be best to note that it will be a short-term stint. Though he has proven he can still be effective, the fact is that Anthony is aging and likely nearing the end of his NBA career.
Hence the best to expect is a minimum deal or a mid-level one at the most. It will be interesting if this alters Anthony’s interest. It may also depend if Anthony gets a better offer (and chance) from other teams.
Looking at his resume, the only thing that Anthony is missing is an NBA title. A logical landing spot would be the Los Angeles Lakers where his good friend, LeBron James, is playing. If he ends up getting meager offers like a minimum deal, the 2013 NBA scoring champion may want to factor that in his offseason plans.
A New York homecoming would also make sense, assuming Anthony is content simply playing for as long as he can. In his last stint, Anthony was never able to lead the Knicks past the second-round. Looking at their roster right now, New York has questionable chances of immediately turning things around for the 2020-21 season.
Hence, it all boils down to what offer is on the table for Anthony. If it is a minimum deal as speculated, he may be better off agreeing to one with the Lakers or some NBA team in contention for the title. Once and if he wins an NBA title, perhaps Anthony will finally be at peace and wrap up his pro basketball career on a high note.
