As expected, the Brooklyn Nets will be adding another piece to their roster with reports that Goran Dragic is set to sign with the franchise.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, sources reveal that Dragic is signing with the Nets and looms as a solid addition who need all the help they can get if they are to win it all this season.
Ironically, it would be the second time the Nets tried to land the 35-year-old veteran guard. Last summer, Brooklyn tried to acquire Dragic from the Toronto Raptors in a trade that involved Kyle Lowry.
However, Raptors head coach Nick Nurse was against it, likely hoping to keep the All-Star guard for the 2021-22 season. But as most know, that move backfired with Dragic eventually sitting out games and then being traded to the San Antonio Spurs.
The Spurs unsurprisingly bought out Dragic, paving the way for the Slovenian to find a new home that appears to be imminently in Brooklyn.
There were several teams interested in Dragic, one of which was the Los Angeles Lakers. But the purple and gold were in a worse predicament and there were questions in the air on how relevant the Slovenian would be in the Lakers’ backcourt.
The case is different with the Nets even with the presence of Kyrie Irving. As most know, “Uncle Drew” is playing more as a part-time player since he has yet to be vaccinated. This would prevent the All-Star guard from suiting up in several games – an added problem the Nets do not need at this point.
Further, there is the state of health of resident star Kevin Durant. The former NBA MVP is dealing with injuries of his own and needs players who can help hold up the fort.
Ben Simmons, the key player in that James Harden trade to the Philadelphia 76ers has yet to suit up. If Durant sits, he and Dragic may be tasked to carry the load of the Nets. But with two NBA cagers sitting out some games, it will be interesting how the two can fit into the Nets’ system and help the club get back on the right track.
