A somber weekend, racing drivers remember the late Dick Trickle who past away earlier this week. Short-track racing ace Trickle took his own life Thursday afternoon at a cemetary just 40 miles northwest of Charlotte. He was 71 years old. Carl Edwards paid tribute to the racing legend by placing Trickle's name on his door. Together, Carl Edwards and Dick Trickle will star the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race from pole position.
A tricky qualifying session, drivers had to make a four-tire pit stop amid setting three laps. Edwards managed to snag pole with a quick time of 111.297 seconds
"I didn't know if I deserved to have that name above my door," said Edwards. Having looked up to Trickle, Edwards expressed that he believed Trickle was "the toughest human being alive."
"Hopefully his family is doing as best they can," Edwards said. "Hopefully he's in a better place and we're honoring him by doing that."
Behind Edwards down the grid order is Kurt Busch in second with a 112.447 second time, followed by Greg Biffle, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano.
A truly exciting qualifying session, NASCAR has removed the pit road speed limits for the session, allow drivers to rocket off Turn 4 and take the pit road flat before slamming into their pit box.
"To execute coming on pit road at 157 mph, it's pretty wild," Kurt Busch said. "It's like a step back in time to throw caution to the wind and let her rip."
The fastest down pit lane was Logano, who stood on the brakes to slot into his pit after topping out at 158 mph.
However, not all drivers could adjust to the new pit lane formate. Drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick all had pit lane penalties that dropped them 15th, 18th, and 19th, respectively.
Last but not least, Martin Truex Jr. and Jamie McMurray will make up the front row for the preliminary Sprint Showdown race, in which the top two drivers and a fan vote winner transfer to the main event.
