A blistering 202.452 mphlap on the fast surfaces of the Michigan International Speedwayallowed Carl Edwards to clinch pole position for the upcoming Quicken Loans 400 Sprint Cup race.
A total of thirteen drivers managed to excede 200 mph during the qualifying session. However, the Michigan International Speedway speed record of 203.241 set by Marcos Ambrose last June is unbroken.
After Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, Paul Menard and Aric Almirola round out the top five quickest. The remaining drivers that qualified in the top ten are Joey Logano, Austin Dillon, Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Juan Pablo Montoya.
"This just started this ball rolling," Edwards said. "This is [only] one lap, and it's good. I'm really happy, but it's the process that's going to put us out in front of Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing and the rest of the Sprint Cup guys we race every Sunday. That process is just starting. If we can use these things to move forward and gain faith in a better process, I think it's going to be great."
This is the first pole for any Ford this season. Having only won two of the 14 races so far, Edwards is determined to take a win.
However, Kasey Kahne and his #5 Chevy SS are unfazed.
"It's about the tire being different and the track surface maybe losing a little bit of grip," Kahne said. "The tire plays a big part in that. To come as close as Carl and Kurt did, and we were right behind - to come as close to the track record shows how fast the car is here."
