A Muslim man has been accused of stabbing his wife to death for not following Islamic traditions and not wearing a burqa in Tilak Nagar, Mumbai, India on Monday, Sept. 26.
The accused, identified as 36-year-old Iqbal Mohammad Sheikh, a Muslim man, and the victim, Rupali Chandanshive, who belongs to the Hindu religion, reportedly got married some three years ago. In order to marry Sheikh, Rupali converted from Hinduism to Islam and was renamed Zara. After their union, Zara reportedly faced relentless pressure from Sheikh's family to follow Islamic tradition and wear a burqa, India Today reported.
The couple reportedly engaged in frequent heated arguments and fights after Zara declined his family's demands for her to wear a burqa while going out around their neighborhood. Due to their constant disagreements, the couple reportedly decided to part ways. After the seperation, Zara lived with her parents, and their minor son lived with his father Shaikh.
Recently, Zara transferred from her family's house to a rental accommodation in Chembur, Mumbai. On Monday, Sept. 26, Zara met Sheikh and demanded a divorce. However, Sheikh was unwilling to accept the divorce as they have a child together and demanded custody of their son, Deccan Herald reported.
When Zara opposed to his demands, a heated argument ensued between the couple. As their confrontation escalated, Sheikh, in a fit of rage, allegedly picked up a knife, and attacked the victim. Sheikh allegedly brutally slit her throat with the knife before fleeing the scene.
Following the attack, locals informed Zara's family that she had been assaulted. When Zara's parents rushed to the scene, they found her in a pool of blood with stab wounds on her neck and hands. They immediately rushed her to the Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar for treatment. However, she subsequently succumbed to her injuries and died at the hospital.
Following the incident, officers launched an investigation into the killing. Based on the accounts of some eyewitnesses, the police lodged a murder case against Shaikh and arrested him. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
