A terrified mother shot her boyfriend after he threw her five-year-old daughter, whom he called a ‘demon’, off an apartment balcony in Las Vegas on Sunday, Sept.12.
Following the incident, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police on Monday arrested 32-year-old Jarick Willis, on suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse.
According to the arrest report obtained by local media, the suspect had tried to warn the mother that her daughter "had bad entities" in her.
Willis then reportedly threw the child off a third-floor balcony, the arrest report stated.
Police officers were dispatched to the apartment complex after they received multiple frightening reports about a small child being thrown from a high balcony which was followed by the sound of a gunshot, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police told local news channel KSNV.
Responding officers located the poor child suffering from a collapsed lung, a lacerated liver, and a fractured rib, pelvis, leg, and forearm. Emergency services rushed the child to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries
When the police spoke to the mother, she identified Willis as her boyfriend and said they have been dating since March.
She told investigators that Willis "essentially...believed" that her daughter was "full of bad spirits", "had bad entities", and "was a demon".
The protective mother said she told him not to speak about her daughter like that to which he reportedly apologized.
At a later time, the mother said she was at her apartment with her two children when she heard her son scream.
She told the investigators that she believed her boyfriend had killed her daughter and that she believed she was going to be next.
The mother told police that she got a gun from her purse and confronted Willis before they got into an altercation. It is believed that he lunged at her so she fired her gun.
In an escape attempt, Willis jumped off the balcony but was later located by police, bleeding from a gunshot wound. He was later arrested in hospital.
The five-year-old girl remained in intensive care but is reported to be in stable condition and is expected to recover soon.
Willis was being treated in the hospital as of Tuesday and could not be transported for his first court hearing. He will attend court once he has recovered from injuries to his hand and chest.
