A mother in Georgia has been charged Monday with murder for the death of her 7-year-old son. Alison Jones, 36, reportedly shot her son, Maddox, while he was in bed after she told her husband the boy was not feeling well enough to go to school.
According to police reports, officers were called to the family’s home in Bishop around 7:20 in the morning by Douglas Jones, 50, who lodged the 911 call telling dispatchers that his wife “shot their son and was assaulting him.”
Detectives said the couple had been arguing most of the night and Alison had gone to sleep in the boy’s room. The husband told police that he awoke at 6:30 a.m. that morning and went into his son’s room to make sure he was getting ready for school. Alison told her husband that the boy would be staying home from school because he had an earache.
An hour later, Douglas said he heard a gunshot and rushed into his son’s room to check on the boy at which his wife attempted to shoot him as well with a semi-automatic handgun. Douglas managed to disarm his wife before the police arrived.
Alison then left the residence but returned and attacked him again.
The boy died from a fatal gunshot wound while lying in his bed and was pronounced dead at the scene while Douglas was reported to be unharmed, The Sun wrote.
Chief dep. Keith Howard said the first deputy to arrive at the home found the couple on the front stoop of the house where Douglas told the deputy to “arrest her, she did it”.
They were both taken in for questioning and Alison was arrested without incident. Investigators are still trying to figure out the motive that led Alison to shoot their son.
County Sheriff Robert Markley said Alison Jones was taciturn while being questioned at the Sheriff’s Office, Morgan County Citizen reported.
“She didn’t want to talk to us. It’s a tragedy. All these cases affect you but any case that involves the needless death of a child is beyond troubling,” Markley said.
Alison Jones has also been further charged with aggravated assault for allegedly shooting her husband. She has yet to enter pleas to the charges against her, and remains in custody. She is scheduled for a preliminary superior court hearing in April.
