Monterrey's dreams of moving forward in the Champions League after a seemingly unstoppable winning streak has come to an end.

The team's run, winning the first three editions of the CONCACAF Champions League, came to a halt Saturday after being defeated by Club America 2-1, leaving them locked out of the continental competition upon failing to make the finals of the Liga MX Clausura playoffs, MLS reported.

Monterry wasn't looking too bad until América's Raúl Jiménez scored on a penalty in the 63rd minute of play. Christian Benítez scored the game winner in the 83rd, advancing his team to the next round.

Aldo de Nigris of Monterrey and a known star of la seleccion mexicana scored late in the game, but the goal did not provide enough footing to get the team back in the game.

Club American joins the ranks for a spot in the Champions League competition with the likes of Club Tijuana, Toluca and the winner of the Cruz Azul-Santos Laguna match.
