Monica Puig a 19-year-old from Puerto Rico served up an unexpected upset at Wimbledon when she faced off against the fifth-seeded Italian Sara Errani in her first senior grand slam tournament.

Ranked 65th in the world and having never played a professional match on a grass court nobody, especially Errani, expected Puig to win 6-3 6-2 when she faced the Italian on court 18.

Monica Puig told BBC Sport that she was "thrilled" with the win and felt that that the match had a relaxed atmosphere.

"It was a very relaxed game for me," the 19-year-old told BBC. "At the beginning I just blinked and I was up 6-3 5-1. I was able to close it out and I am very happy with this win. My dad called me and he was ecstatic. My [mom] is here and she is very proud and my coach as well. I haven't stopped receiving messages so everybody is thrilled."

Puig told the Associated Press that thanks to her, tennis is starting to grow in popularity in Puerto Rico. The AP asked Monica Puig if she is considered a national hero. Laughing the teen responded,

"Yeah basically. The big sports over there are basically boxing, baseball and basketball. Now that I've been doing well, tennis is starting to become bigger as well."

Monica Puig will face Silvia Soler-Espinosa in her next match on June 26.
