A mother decided to cancel Christmas for her 5-year-old after receiving a detailed email from the child's teacher for her "atrocious" behavior.
The mother, whose story has gone viral on social media, explained that her daughter, Madison, had been struggling with "defiance" and disruptive actions in class.
Earlier in December, a phone call from the teacher led to a frank discussion with Madison about her behavior. Despite discussions, the presence of Elf on the Shelf, and other disciplinary tactics used throughout the year, just before winter break, the mother received what she described as a "50-page email' from the teacher, detailing Madison's "atrocious" behavior.
"You know it's bad when a teacher emails you at 5:30 a.m.," the mom said.
A teacher herself, the mother took drastic action: removing the family's Christmas tree, packing decorations away, and letting her daughter know there wouldn't be a Christmas celebration at their house this year.
"My 5-year-old is not having Christmas this year, and that's just what it is," she said. "Christmas gifts and celebration are a privilege."
The mother emphasized that her parenting approach centered on teaching consequences for behavior. "Structure doesn't mean whooping your kid's ass," she explained. "It means you do this, this happens. Logical consequences. Cause and effect."
Although some online users have praised her for setting boundaries, others have criticized the decision as overly harsh for a child so young. The mother stood by her approach, expressing confidence that Maddie would learn valuable lessons from the experience.
"She's five, and she's going to learn that these are the consequences for those behaviors," the mom concluded.
While Maddie's Christmas at home has been canceled, the mother hinted that gifts from other family members may still make their way to her, ensuring the child doesn't entirely miss out on the holiday spirit.
