On Wednesday, Apr. 27, the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up their three-game series that was marred by a bench-clearing brawl.
It stemmed from a series of hits and pitches with frustration unsurprisingly growing over the Mets' side. This appears to be tied to the fact that Yoan Lopez buzzed Nolan Arenado, resulting in the bench-clearing.
After the incident, Arenado and Lopez ended up jawing. However, no punches were thrown. However, this did not spare him from getting sanctioned.
The MLB on Thursday, Apr. 28, suspended Arenado for two games for contributing to the incitement of the incident. Also suspended was Cardinals receiver Genesis Cabrera after he hit JD Davis with a pitch in the prior half. He was suspended for one game.
Lopez was not suspended but was fined. The fines to him, Arenado and Cabrera were not disclosed, CBS Sports reported.
Other MLB players who were fined included Jack Flaherty of the Cardinals and Taijuan Walker of the Mets. Both were fined for leaving the dugout and participating in the incident despite being on the injured list.
"After (Davis) got (hit) in the ankle, that was kind of the last straw for them, and I had a feeling it was coming," Arenado said to MLB.com after Wednesday's game. "(The pitching being up high) was more of the problem. I get what's going on in this series, and it's part of the game. I don't know how close it was, but it felt close."
There were three Mets and two Cardinals players hit in the game though they did not appear to be intentional.
"It's one of those things, whether it's intentional or not, it has to stop," Starling Marte said. "We're tired of it and we're going to have to do something about it if it continues to happen because it is uncomfortable every time you go out there to get hit."
Both teams meet again in a four-game series at Citi Field from May 16 to 19.
