A baby in California that was abducted from his grandmother was found safe and sound by police officers on Tuesday morning, as three suspects were arrested for the kidnapping plot against the baby.
Brandon Cuellar, a three-month-old infant, was kidnapped on Monday while his grandmother was unloading groceries from her car. A man was seen at the time to be entering her apartment to take the baby carrier, according to ABC 7.
As the search for the baby continued, a tweet by the California Highway Patrol of the possible car of the suspects was up long enough for an employee of a nursing home to recognize the car and call the police about it.
“Eventually, then the San Jose Police Department did show up and they went right over and they blocked the vehicle both the front and the back and they went to the alleged suspect's house and at that point, they went they invaded the home,” Chris Martinez, the facility's director of operations, said.
Police officers, including Sgt. Christian Camarillo, have stated that they believe that the attempted kidnapping and abduction of the baby was a premeditated crime, though they have yet to release a possible motive for kidnapping the baby, the New York Post reported.
“This was planned,” Camarillo said. “This was not random.”
Among the people who were detained was a woman who was with Brandon’s grandmother during the incident. It is unclear if she was also arrested, but police are currently holding her due to inconsistencies regarding her statement.
“This was a person who was with the grandmother yesterday when they went shopping, she was present at the apartment complex when this happened,” Camarillo said. “There have been some inconsistencies with what she has told us. Obviously, drawing our attention to what she knows about this.”
The neighbors of Brandon’s family welcomed the return of the child as they spoke about the worry that they felt during the 24 hours where the baby child was missing.
“When we found out that it was a kidnapping of a 3-month-old, I was just, I couldn't imagine,” Stephanie said. “My heart went in sync, it ran into anxiety. I just couldn't keep my mind off of it. Went to dinner, still couldn't keep my mind off of it because there was a baby missing.”
“Super relieved for the mom, for the family,” Leandra Duran said. “It's scary but glad he was found safe in a short amount of time too.”
