"Miss Latina Universo" is getting ready to rock the beauty pageant reality shows as we know it. Telemundo announced it will premiere the first-ever reality show in television history to send its winner to the most watched beauty pageant in the world, Miss Universe. The Sunday show will be hosted by "Un Nuevo Día" personality Rashel Díaz and former "Despierta America" host Raúl González. Following extensive national auditions, “Miss Latina Universo” will introduce a group of beautiful women who meet the criteria for participating in “Miss Universe.” In accordance with the rules established by this international pageant, the participants will compete to win the audience’s support, regardless of their heritage. A pool of judges composed of celebrities with extensive experience in the world of entertainment and fashion, as well as judging beauty competitions, will guide the contestants but, ultimately, the winner will be chosen by the audience vote.
After the first elimination, a group of 14 candidates will live together 24/7 and participate in a demanding Academy program until one of them is crowned as the first “Miss Latina Universo.” The winner of the series will not only represent the U.S. but also the Latino culture. The stakes for this new competition are high and more is on the line for the beauty queens that will be selected. Telemundo's main rival, Univision has a show with a similar concept titled "Nuestra Belleza Latina" that has been airing for the past eight seasons with much success. "Miss Latina Universo" is a fresh twist to the concept and here are the Top 5 Reasons it can pose a ratings threat to the Univision reality show: 1. Fresh Twist: As we mentioned before, this is a fresh twist to the concept we know. Sure the overall idea is similar, but this will be done by a set of different people that can really make a difference. Just like we have Coca-Cola and Pepsi, "American Idol" and "The Voice" and Univision and Telemundo, these two shows can co-exist being the same, but different.
2. Ultimate Prize: The grand prize is not just money and the promise of stardom, it's an actual spot on the Miss Universe pageant. For the winners of these type of shows, it all ends once they are crowned, but for the winner of "Miss Latina Universo" the competition will not end there. Winning the Miss Universe pageant gives the winner and even great prize and world recognition as it is watched across the globe in huge numbers. 3. Where Are The Winners?: Aside from Alejandra Espinoza who hit the jackpot winning the Univision reality show, what happened to the other winners? It seems that the network had too much love for Espinoza that they forgot they had other winners that they could have given jobs to, instead of using the same person for every show they could think of. Winning "Nuestra Belleza Latina" at this point is just winning cash and a line on your resume, it doesn't seem to be opening doors to many other contestants. Which puts the Telemundo reality show in an optimal position as can improve in that area.
4. Voting Controversy: The 8th season of NBL just ended and with it came a scandal that the show doesn't need. Univision was accused of tampering with the votes and questioning the veracity of Aleyda Ortiz's win, suggesting that Josephine Ochoa was robbed. Although the voting process was cleared out it tarnishes the competition and people will undoubtedly not be as trustworthy as before. 5. Waning Interest: Although the show is still a massive hit for Univision, the interest is not the same anymore. The formula is repetitive and season after season it just feels the same way. Although they made some cast changes to this last season, it still didn't seem enough to want to come back and see the show. In tv years, 8 seasons is old. "Miss Universo Latina" and "Nuestra Belleza Latina" will not be competing head-to-head but the comparisons will be inevitable! Which reality show do you think will stand out and win the ratings war? "Miss Universo Latina" premieres on Sunday, June 15 at 8/7c p.m. on Telemundo.
