A child was killed by the same bus he reportedly threw rocks at in the Philippines' busy road on Thursday. The bus was traveling on the northbound lane at around 9:00 a.m. when the incident happened according to the InterAgency Council for Traffic (i-ACT) citing witnesses.
Based on reports, the victim was reportedly throwing rocks at a public bus that resulted in its windshield being broken. The child tried to flee the carousel area designated for buses but ended up getting hit at the left side of the public transport.
The bus was reportedly slowing down at that point before slamming into the child. When the vehicle made a full stop, the driver of the bus called for help.
Authorities responded to the calls of the driver but their arrival came a bit late with the child already pronounced dead. The details on the victim and the bus driver remain limited as of this writing.
The incident happened at the MRT Santolan and Ortigas stations. The bus driver is now under the custody of local authorities, cooperating with the investigation.
The incident garnered backlash on social media. One came to the defense of the driver and pinned the blame on the child’s parents who should take responsibility for why the minor was there in the first place. Most called on the parents to face the charges and not the driver who was simply trying to earn a decent living.
Authorities were not spared from criticism as well. Some were wondering where the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel at this time. The MMDA is the group supposed to implement the law prohibiting minors from loitering.
A video of the incident was posted on the IACT’s Facebook page. In the video, the boy could still be under the left side of the public vehicle whose windshield was damaged from the thrown rocks.
