"Minecraft," the popular video game, is headed to the big screen as Warner Bros. has just bought the rights. The studio who is also behind "The Lego Movie" has teamed up with the Swedish game developer, Mojang AB, with Roy Lee set to produce along with Jill Messick, reports Deadline. Lee, who produced the mega hit motion picture based on the building blocks, made the studio gross over $279 million worldwide to date. "Minecraft" has already gotten a lot of interest from writers and filmmakers wanting to be part of this new project.
"Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks," is how the game is described. "At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things. It can also be about adventuring with friends or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean. It’s pretty. Brave players battle terrible things in The Nether, which is more scary than pretty. You can also visit a land of mushrooms if it sounds more like your cup of tea." The virtual building blocks game is available on PCs and Mac's as well as a special Pocket Edition for iOS and Android devices, with an Xbox 360 edition also available from the XBLA Marketplace. The site reports that more than 14.3 million people have bought the game in its PC/Mac version.
In the open world builder, users dream up of their own world and construct buildings and environments using virtual blocks. Players are dropped into a deserted space and are forced to start reviving this place by using the cubes to build a world. The catch is that there are negative forces out there that will destroy your efforts making players think about how and where they create these buildings. Various modes are available for play across multiple consoles. No time frame for the film has been set at this time, but more news is expected soon. Will you be watching the Minecraft movie when it hits theaters?
