National Security Advisor Mike Waltz's email usage has drawn ire from social media users after it was reported that the Trump administration cabinet member carried out official government business over unsecured email accounts despite criticizing Hillary Clinton for a similar offense.
Gmail, the email service Waltz had reportedly been using for official business, is much less secure than the Signal messaging app, the platform upon which several of the Trump administration's senior staff members discussed sensitive attack plans set to be carried out in Yemen and were exposed for doing so by an journalist mistakenly added to the group chat, according to The Washington Post.
Though administration officials, as well as President Donald Trump himself, have downplayed what is now being referred to as Signalgate, many users pointed out how several of the same officials had different opinions on national security in 2016, when it was revealed that Democratic presidential candidate and former First Lady Hillary Clinton used a private email server to conduct official business while serving as Secretary of State.
"The rigged system refused to prosecute her for conduct that put all of us, everybody in this room, everybody in this country at risk. Hillary Clinton went to great lengths to create a private email server and to bypass government security in order to keep her emails from being read by the public and by federal officials," Trump said while campaigning in Virginia in November 2016.
"Any security professional, military, government or otherwise, would be fired on the spot for this type of conduct and criminally prosecuted for being so reckless with this kind of information," then-Fox News contributor Pete Hegseth said about Clinton's private email server in 2016.
Users took to online platforms to highlight the perceived hypocrisy.

After Clinton's email scandal was revealed, some experts accused her of breaking state protocol and procedure. Although no charges were brought against Clinton for her use of the private email, it became a key point of contention during her campaign.
