President-elect Donald Trump shook hands with his estranged former vice president, Mike Pence, at Jimmy Carter's funeral on Thursday. Both have traded criticism since their fallout stemming from Pence's refusal to play a role in overturning the 2020 presidential election on January 6, 2021.

The members of the Republican presidential ticket gathered along with other former U.S. heads of state and vice presidents for the state funeral taking place in Washington D.C. Pence also shook hands with Melania Trump.

Pence seemed to take a veiled jab at Trump just this week when he praised Vice President Kamala Harris for conducting a peaceful certification of Trump's electoral victory.

The message came four years after a mob comprised of Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol seeking to interrupt the certification of Joe Biden's victory, with some of them chanting "hang Mike Pence" due to his refusal to prevent the certification.

Harris presided the ceremony as president of the Senate and in a brief and simple declaration certified the 2024 election results by saying "democracy prevails." Shortly after, she received a standing ovation from members of the Democratic party when her vote total was read.

Pence wrote that the peaceful transfer of power remains the "hallmark of our democracy," adding that "members of both parties in the House and Senate along with the vice president certified the election without controversy or objection."

Pence, who won't have a role in the upcoming administration and has been critical of Trump since the Jan.6 riots, also praised members of the House, Senate, saying they all "did their duty under the Constitution of the United States," highlighting Harris's stance by saying it was "particularly admirable" that she would preside over the certification of a presidential election that she lost."
