Before Prince Harry tied the knot with Meghan Markle in 2018, he had a long-standing, on-and-off relationship with Chelsy Davy. The two had been together for almost seven years, but why didn’t they end up married?
A report claimed that Queen Elizabeth might be the reason why Prince Harry and Davy didn’t end up together. In a 2006 report by Sunday Express, a Palace aid revealed that the monarch warned her grandsons about getting married too quickly after the several royal divorces she had witnessed.
The Queen saw the damage it had inflicted on the monarchy, from the late Princess Diana and Prince Charles to Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s divorces, among others. So she felt like she had enough.
As the head of the Church of England, Queen Elizabeth strongly opposed divorce. “The concept of divorce goes against the Queen’s whole upbringing, which is about duty and about soldiering on in the face of adversity,” the Palace aid said.
Her Majesty believed that there would be more royal divorces on her reign, although she didn’t want to drop names. She already witnessed the divorce of her sister, Princess Margaret, and her three eldest children, and she couldn’t bear seeing another.
So at the time of Prince Harry and Davy’s relationship, Queen Elizabeth believed that he was not yet ready to settle down with all the partying and all the scandals he was involved in. His grandmother reportedly talked him out of marriage until he was fully prepared for it.
There are even reports that Davy was also not yet ready to marry a prince. The Zimbabwean businesswoman earlier revealed that she felt uncomfortable being often on the spotlight as Prince Harry’s girlfriend. “It was so full-on: Crazy and scary and uncomfortable,” she said. “I found it very difficult when it was bad. I couldn’t cope.”
Prince Harry and Davy met in 2004 and ended their romance in 2009. However, there were rumors that they continued hooking up until 2015. Regardless of their breakup, they remained amicable as she even got an invite to the Duke of Sussex’s wedding to Meghan last year.
