Middle-Aged California Couple Gunned Down While on Vacation in 'Do Not Travel' State in Mexico

Two Californians were found murdered inside of a pickup truck in Mexico, officials say.

Sacramento residents 50-year-old Gloria Ambriz and 53-year-old Rafael Cardona had been on vacation in Mexico, visiting family. They were traveling in a black 2016 Ford Platinum pickup truck when gunmen began shooting at them near an intersection on Wednesday night.

Law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting in Angamacutiro in the western state of Michoacán, where they found the couple in their pickup truck, reported Fox News Digital.

Ambriz was pronounced dead at the scene. Cardona was transported to a hospital in Puruándiro, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Ballistic evidence recovered from the scene has been submitted to an ongoing investigation into the homicides. A team of prosecutors, police and forensic experts has been assembled by the office of the Attorney General to apprehend those responsible for the killings.

The U.S. State Department lists Michoacán as a "do not travel" area in Mexico.

"Violent crime—such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery—is widespread and common in Mexico," the federal agency noted. "The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in many areas of Mexico, as travel by U.S. government employees to certain areas is prohibited or restricted. In many states, local emergency services are limited outside the state capital or major cities."
