Microsoft's rumored "Surface 2" launch date has been announced. Despite the mixed reviews received by the existing Surface tablet, Microsoft is pushing forward with the installment in the Surface series. With the sales of the previous two tablet devices, Surface RT and Surface Pro, throwing little competition into the handheld device market, Microsoft will have to release an outstanding device to simply make some waves.

The rumors surrounding this next-gen tablet just received a dose of reality as Microsoft has sent out invitations to an event on September 23. In regards to a release date, the most likely time for the "Surface 2" to launch will be in mid-October, alongside the release of Microsoft's new operating system, Windows 8.1.

Now for specs, the next-generation Surface with Windows RT will simply be called the "Surface 2", and for Microsoft will be more of a performance boost rather than a complete reinvention and redesign. The "Surface 2" will feature a Tegra 4 processor that will support a sharper 1080p display and 4GB of RAM in an otherwise familiar design.

The main component that gets a redesign will be the tablet's flexible two-stage kickstand and a color option between white and black. The news regarding the "Surface 2" has been relatively the same, but hopefully we will find out a ton more at Microsoft's press event in NYC later this month.
