Continuing preparations ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, both the Mexican and South Korean national teams are set for an international friendly that certainly won’t struggle for attention. Set to be played Wednesday, Jan. 29 from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, this pre-World Cup match will serve as another way for each side to get further acclimated with many of the players they’ll play alongside at the summer tournament. El Tri certainly did not have much to brag about following a down-trodden 2013 but with the arrival and eventual hiring of Coach Miguel Herrera, Mexico was able to earn a spot at the 2014 games thanks to an impressive playoff performance against New Zealand.
While El Tri was busy solidifying the national team’s sixth-straight World Cup berth, South Korea -- who currently rank 53rd in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings -- did enough to earn their spot out of Asia’s Group A Qualifying section. Set to take part in their second of three-straight friendlies on U.S. soil, the Taegeuk Warriors -- who will bring a relatively young roster to Brazil - hope to use their upcoming slate as a time to highlight which players will appear on the full-time roster in Brazil.
Miguel Herrera will be coaching Mexico for the first time sans the "interim" label and while his upcoming opponent will most likely be more analytical of the talent on the field, El Piojo has a pretty good idea of who will grace the pitch against South Korea and for the foreseeable future. Players including Miguel Layun, Paul Aguilar, Rafa Marquez, Jesus Medina, Moises Munoz, Carlos Pena, Luis Montes, Francisco Rodriguez, Oribe Peralta, Giovani Dos Santos and Jesus Corona will all feature on the 2014 El Tri roster, talents that will surely rise in importance as the 2014 World Cup continues to approach.
