Mexican authorities announced the extradition of 13 “capos” and organized crime kingpins to the United States to face charges on a number of crimes such as drug trafficking and murder, including the killing of a U.S. Consulate employee. Among the 13 is Edgar Valdez Villareal aka “La Barbie,” a former leader of the Beltrán Leyva brothers cartel.
During a press conference, Director in chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the Attorney General’s Office (AIC/PGR), Tomás Zerón, said that Edgar Valdez was being accused of organized crime, possession of ammunition exclusive to the Mexican army, murder, and is wanted by the Louisiana court for “narcotraffic” and money laundering.
The criminals in question were prisoners at the Altiplano maximum-security prison located in Mexico, the same prison Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán escaped from. Years before, the Mexican government showed opposition when it came to the extradition of criminals to the country but after “El Chapo’s” escape, they agreed to reconsider their position.
Back in June, an agreement was announced between U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Mexico’s Attorney General Arely Gómez González to fight organized crime, “I am grateful to our Mexican counterparts not only for their assistance with this important matter, but also for their extraordinary efforts and unwavering partnership in our ongoing fight against international organized crime,” Lynch said in a statement.
