Singer Melissa, also known as “La Princesa de la Banda” and “La Barbie Grupera” is in the middle of a huge scandal after militia members in the state of Michoacán, Mexico began digging into her past and her family and found out she is the daughter of Enrique “El Kike” Plancarte Solís, a high-ranking leader of the Knights Templar drug cartel.
After a few days of public scrutiny, Melissa finally spoke releasing a statement on her Facebook account. “Regarding my father, I naturally love him, but I am not the one to judge him nor I am responsible for his acts, and I am not the one to blame. I'm totally oblivious to the situations that people are linking me with. My world, my dream and my passion is music and I have been devoted to it for a while, at the same time I focus on my studies. My career cannot be tainted by events that I don’t take part in.”
However, all her efforts to carry on with her life have been in vain. A lot of her performances have been cancelled after it came to light that she was related to Enrique Plancarte Solís because people don’t want to be implicated in drug-related affairs although the singer has claimed her career has nothing to do with her father. Melissa is trying hard to reactivate her dying career from the United States, allegedly through the company Frontera Visual, based in California.
More recently, she gave an interview to Estrella TV Melissa revealed she hasn’t seen her father since she was 15 years old, and when she was asked what would she tell him if she saw him, she replied “That I miss him.” She added that she wants peace for Michoacán, but given the current situation, it’s not going to happen anytime soon. “I feel proud of being ‘michoacana,’ but the truth is I wish this whole thing wasn’t happening. I would like peace, because this is a pretty area, with a lot of nature, and I would like people to appreciate it, but right now, with all the violence, it’s impossible.”
