Megyn Kelly, the popular Fox News anchor, will remain with the network having renewed her contract on Tuesday along with fellow Fox newswoman Greta Van Susteren. What remains unknown is whether or not Kelly will take over a prime time spot on the Fox News Channel, particularly Van Susteren's 10 p.m. time slot.
Media speculation suggested Kelly had been considering jumping ship to another network. "The Huffington Post" reported that there were rumors Kelly met with executives at CNN and ABC while looking to capitalize on the success she's acquired hosting her two-hour afternoon program "America Live," as well as her high profile coverage of last year's election night where she candidly questioned Fox's voting analysts about Karl Rove's assertions that the network has called Ohio for President Obama prematurely. The moment went viral and even had Fox News chief executive Roger Ailes admitting "a lot of people will try to recruit her" when her contract expires.
A potential move in Fox News' prime time lineup would be a daring maneuver by the network which has successfully kept pace with rivals MSNBC and CNN by maintaining a more disciplined schedule. And while perennial hosts Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity will remain in their 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. slots, respectively, concerns over Van Susteren's 10 p.m. program "On the Record" have ranged from declining ratings to the host's own questionable enthusiasm to continue in the prime time slot.
John Coale, Van Susteren's husband and legal counselor in contract negotiations, was diagnosed with cancer in December. After having undergone surgery in February, Coale has alluded to the idea that he and his wife would like to spend more time together in the evening. Although he would not comment on impending changes, Coale did state in a phone interview on Tuesday with "The New York Times" that Van Susteren might be interested to move to an earlier hour sometime later in the year.
The timing may work out for Kelly who is now pregnant with her third child.
