Mo’ne Davis made history on Friday when she became the first girl pitcher to win a game and throw a shutout in the Little League World Series. Davis has become an overnight star as she is the first girl to appear for a United States team in Williamsport in over a decade.
Davis received a thunderous ovation from the home state crowd as she threw a two hit shutout with 8 strikeouts and no walks. Philadelphia beat Nashville 4-0 in both teams opener of the double elimination tournament.
Davis is just the 18th girl to play in the Little League World Series, but with every victory her team gets her fandom grows. Almost 16,000 people were in attendance to watch Davis pitch on Friday and even more watched on television across the globe. In fact, Davis’s story has grabbed the attention of Los Angeles Angels All-Star Mike Trout, NBA MVP Kevin Durant, and rapper Lil Wayne. All three stars tweeted about Mo’ne’s performance on Friday:
Davis is thriving under the spotlight, but admitted to having goose bumps when she took the mound in the most important game she’s ever played thus far in her young career. After her team jumped out to an early lead however, she said her nerves dissipated.
“The nerves went away, and I just went out there and had fun.” She told reporters after the game. “I settled into the game as it went by. I got to know the umpire’s strike zone, so that helped me out a lot.”
Asked if she saw herself as a role model to young girls in the world who want to play baseball, her answer was a resounding yes.
“It’s very unreal. I never thought that at the age of 13 I would be a role model, but now it’s real. I always wanted to be a basketball role model; being a baseball role model is really cool.”
