Little league superstar Mo’Ne Davis was in Los Angeles ahead of the Dodgers game against the Nationals on Tuesday to finally compete against Clayton Kershaw in their well-hyped “pitch off.” Kershaw takes the mound tonight in search of his Major League leading 17th win. He faces a tough test in a Nationals team that has been hot as of late and home run happy.
Mo’ne Davis was on the field at Dodgers Stadium with Queen Latifah before the game. Davis met Dodgers phenom, Yasiel Puig, Adrian Gonzalez, and had a conversation with Matt Kemp over who should throw out the first pitch, Davis or Queen Latifah. “You’re a professional, you should let her do it.” He told Davis referring to Queen Latifah.
The 13-year-old Davis became the first girl to win a game as a pitcher in the Little League World Series last month. Davis donned the cover of Sports Illustrated, and led her team to the semifinal of the Little League World Series when her teams luck ran out in a 6-5 loss to the Jackie Robinson West squad.
Davis threw out the first pitch last week with the rest of her Taney Dragons little league team when her hometown Philadelphia Phillies took on the Washington Nationals.
“At first I was kind of nervous but, I mean, after a while it just went away.” She said.
Davis threw her first pitch to Jonathan Papelbon who gave her advice before the game and signed a personal message on a baseball for her.
“He told me that I had a lot of talent and to use that talent,” she told reporters.
Davis threw a perfect strike to Dodgers backup catcher Drew Butera. The pitch appeared to be a fastball, not one of her devastating curveballs she used to strike out all the boys at the Little League World Series, was arguably one of the best first pitches we’ve seen in recent memory.
Davis’ whirlwind summer comes to a close in a few days when Davis and her teammates head back to school in Philadelphia. Davis will be playing basketball, soccer and baseball throughout the year.
