Marcos 'El Chino' Maidana inspired a great deal of emotion from the crowd but was ultimately defeated by Floyd Mayweather. Maidana managed some impresseive shots, landing punches that previous rivals like Robert Guerrero and Saúl Álvarez, however, ultimately Mayweather was declared the victor by the judges at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The American took the title of World Welterweight Champion from Maidana, joining both the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association titles.

Floyd Mayweather has extended his undefeated record to 46 fights, while Maidana sustained his fourth defeat. The Argentine entered the ring to a huge ovation from the largely Latino crowd: "El Jefe de Jefes" by Noretño band Los Tigres del Norte played over the loudspeaker. Money Mayweather meanwhile came out behind a group of clowns who ran around the stadium tumbling and was also accompanied by pop sensation Justin Bieber.

Maidana surprised Mayweather in the first round with a series of heavy punches, while Mayweather only managed to get in a couple of shots. The first four rounds continued in much the same vein: Maidana launching punches and Mayweather on the defensive, occasionally managing to land some solid punches. The fifth round saw Maidana lose some intensity and Mayweather manged to get the upper hand. In the end, one judge called it a tie 114-114 while the other two saw it 116-112 and 117-111 in favor of Money Mayweather.
