Hold on to your winter coats: spring might not be here just yet. An unseasonable May storm has dropped more than a foot of snow along the central plains and the upper Midwest all through Thursday, surprising residents of three states.

Around 18 inches of snow pounded Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. And even if it's not completely unknown for these states to see fleet this late in the year, the quantity is unprecedented.

"The northernmost areas have seen snow in May before, but not of this magnitude," said Jim Keeney, meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Thermometers dropped to 30 degrees Fahrenheit, and the heavy snow downed trees and caused power outages and road closures.

Chris Franks, of the National Weather Service, said that this storm was three to four times their all-time May record.

"The Twin Cities record for a May snow is three inches. This was absolutely historic," he added.
