Manchester United player Mason Greenwood will reportedly find out in a matter of days if he is to face rape charges after being arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual assault in January.
Police officers arrived at Greenwood's £14,000 ($18,000)-a-month Cheshire mansion on Jan. 31 after a woman reported claims of physical violence and sexual threats on social media. The footballer was then arrested on suspicion of rape and assault of an 18-year-old student. Greenwood was further arrested on Feb. 2 on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill, however, bailed pending further investigation.
Greenwood was held for three days before being bailed. Police are said to be preparing to submit a report to the Crown Prosecution Service "imminently " after his arrest in January.
"He’s still on bail but things are at an advanced stage. The police and CPS are currently discussing if there is a case or not to bring against him," speaking to The Sun, a source said. "There comes a point where a decision has to be made and things have reached that point." Another source claimed, "The police will submit their file imminently."
Manchester United suspended the 20-year-old player while the investigation remains ongoing. The club also pulled out his merchandise from sale and Nike suspended its sponsorship deal with him.
Greenwood has also been removed from the famous football video game FIFA 22 by producers EA Sport and Cadbury, they will not use Greenwood as part of any promotional and marketing campaigns as the investigation is still pending, "Cadbury does not condone violence in any form. Our Partnership is with the club itself and not the individual players," they said in a statement.
"However, while these allegations are being investigated, any marketing or products we create with Manchester United will not feature this player. We will continue to monitor the situation closely."
Greenwood's bail will expire on April 30, however, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that it could be extended.
Greenwood made his senior debut for Manchester United in March 2019, he has made a total of 129 appearances for the club, scoring 35 goals. He is considered one of the most skilled and talented young players in England. Greenwood last played for United during the 1-0 win over West Ham on Jan. 22.
Man Utd have confirmed once again their "strong condemnation" of violence after Greenwood was arrested, although the club are still said to be paying his full salary, which is reported to be £75,000 ($98,000)-a-week.
Social media debate emerged over the fact that his profile was still visible on the club’s website, however, Man Utd have claimed that Greenwood’s status at the club remains unchanged. “His profile was never removed from the website as he remains a Manchester United player, albeit not currently part of the squad while the legal process unfolds.”
