A Maryland mother who attempted to murder her 3-year-old daughter by slashing her neck with a pair of scissors has been charged.
The suspect, 28-year-old Anne Akers, slit her own throat after the incident.
On Saturday, March 27, Akers' relative called 911 after finding blood on the floor of her home in the Wheaton-Glenmont neighborhood near Washington, DC, police said. The relative told police that he fled the home as soon as he saw the blood.
The responding officers entered the house and found blood and a pair of scissors on the floor. Akers was located in her bedroom, bleeding from a wound in her neck.
Officers removed a blanket she was holding and discovered her three-year-old daughter, unresponsive with a "life-threatening laceration to her neck," according to a press release from the police department.
The officers immediately began performing life-saving measures on the child. A Maryland State Police helicopter transported the baby girl to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. She is expected to survive.
"We gotta thank the police for their prompt actions here," Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said. "Some people stepped up and did the right thing. This child is alive because of that."
Akers was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries. The police did not provide any details about the severity of her injuries.
The motive behind the incident is unclear at this time. However, court records show that Akers had filed a complaint in 2019, demanding the custody of the girl.
She is charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder, one count of first-degree assault, and one count of first-degree child abuse.
During the court hearing, Monday, the judge ordered Akers to consult a psychiatrist to check if she’s mentally fit to stand trial for murder.
She is being held without bond at the Central Processing Unit. Her next court appearance is scheduled at the Rockville District Court next Monday.
It is not clear as to where the child's father was when the incident took place.
As this is an ongoing investigation, police have not revealed further details of the incident.
