ABC has already announced "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will return for a fourth season this fall. The network also revealed the series will be moving from the 9 p.m. timeslot to 10 p.m., which ABC president Channing Dungey said will allow the show to "go a little bit edgier, go a little darker and take some risks."
In a recent interview, series star Elizabeth Henstridge (who plays Agent Simmons) told Digital Spy about the show's darker transition.
"I think it's great. I think we've got progressively darker each season and it's great to be able to push those boundaries a little bit," Henstridge said at the AOS panel during the recent MCM Comic Con in London. "I think the writers are excited, because they'll be able to maybe get a little bit sexy... throw in some good swearing!"
Meanwhile, co-star Clark Gregg talked about what is in store for his character, Agent Coulson, in the coming fourth season. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gregg said Coulson is in a tight situation and will be going through the toughest phase of his life when the show returns.
"He's not the director anymore; his destiny is not so much in his own hand as it used to be," Gregg said.
He further goes on to talk about Daisy (Chloe Bennet) being hunted by the agency she once worked for and how that will affect his character.
"The person he cares about is on the run and seems to be very sought after by the authorities. It's very much changing the game for Coulson," the actor said.
While it sounds like the series is getting a bit edgier and more grown up, the dark theme won't help with the interconnection between the TV series and films. Hopefully, the writers will be able to throw in some details that confirm all this happening is in the same universe.
"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is slated to return for its fourth season this fall in late September or early October.
