As Manchester United higher-ups begin the search for a new coach following the Tuesday sacking of David Moyes, the club also continues to plan for a crucial summer transfer period, where nearly £200 million will be made available for the addition of outside talents who supporters hope will be able to guide the Red Devils back to the top of the Barclays Premier League table. While Old Trafford execs plan on revamping a roster that currently sits seventh in the English League, recent reports suggest that Manchester United could lose two young talents to a close rival in the process.
Though his side remains set on a top four finish in the 2013-2014 BPL standings, Everton boss Roberto Martinez has shown interest in the United duo of Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley, even if he is trying to downplay his plans for the upcoming summer transfer window. The Toffees are currently in the No. 5 position, just one point behind the Arsenal Gunners for the coveted fourth slot which would guarantee them a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. Despite the fact that 23-year-old Danny Welbeck is looking for a new home to showcase his striking abilities and Cleverley’s previous experience under Martinez, the Everton coach isn’t ready to commit to anything just yet.
“Well, the crazy rumors are starting,” he said ahead of the club’s upcoming tilt with Southampton. “We've got three games to go. It's an exciting end to the season, and we're talking about possible targets. There's nothing to mention. What there is to mention is that we'll use the window to try to be stronger in terms of the squad, and we'll look at all the players available and the possibilities that we need. We've got three outstanding football events in front of us. We've been working really hard for over 10 months to be in this position, and the only thing that matters is Southampton.”
With Chelsea on-loan forward Romelu Lukaku potentially departing at the end of the season, Martinez could look to Welbeck as a suitable replacement. Appearing in 22 games this season for the Red Devils, the 24-year-old forward Manchester, England native has recorded 9 goals and 1 assist but because his involvement in the striking rotation has not been up to his expectations, Welbeck could look to Roberto Martinez’s side for a fresh opportunity.
If the club isn’t able to land Welbeck, Tom Cleverley could be another option since the 24-year-old has playing experience under Martinez from their time with Wigan Athletic. Cleverley -- who has scored once on 15 shots this season -- played on loan with the Latics during the 2010-2011 campaign and that past partnership could loom big during the upcoming window.
For now, both clubs will continue to focus on their remaining schedules before entering what certainly has the potential to be an active summer transfer period for each side.
