21-year-old England striker Mason Greenwood was arrested Saturday at about 7 a.m. on suspicion of breaching bail conditions imposed nine months ago. In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police representative said they were aware of the allegation and inquiries are ongoing.
Greenwood was first arrested in January on suspicion of rape and assault and was also investigated for making threats to kill. The Manchester United player who made an appearance for England has not been charged with his bail being extended in June. His arrest on Saturday happened at his home in Bowdon, Greater Manchester, BBC reported.
Greenwood who will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court on Monday, has been suspended by Man Utd after he was arrested in January.
The attempted rape allegedly happened in October 2021 with the alleged assault in December, while the coercive behavior allegedly started on November 1, 2018, until Friday. Greenwood was on Man Utd’s squad list for the 2022/23 season as an under-21 player last month. Though his club affirmed that he remains suspended pending the outcome of the judicial process, The Sun reported.
Meanwhile, Manchester Evening News reported that the Crown Prosecution Service reminded all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active. This is because Greenwood has a right to a fair trial. It is also imperative to know that there should be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of materials online which could in any way affect those proceedings.
Greenwood, an English professional football player, plays forward for Premier League club Manchester United. He scored in a UEFA Europa League match against Astana in September 2019, becoming the club's youngest goalscorer in European competition at the age of 17 years, 353 days.
