With the COVID-19 pandemic still in the air, most are advised to still follow the same protocols. At the top of the list is to continue wearing face masks for protection. Unfortunately, some cannot afford to get one but that does not mean they cannot improvise.
To date, some have resorted to some form of face shield to protect them from the coronavirus. In the case of a shepherd who could not afford to wear a mask, Mekala Kurmayya of Chinnamunugal Chad in Telangana’s Mahbubnagar district needed to do something so he could collect his pension. He used a bird's nest as his face mask before entering the government office.
”Mekala Kurmayya can’t buy a mask-still wore one. Kurmayya who hails from Chinnamunugal Chad in Mahabubnagar district Telangana came to mandal center for a pension wearing a bird-nest as a mask! Not the best-but he tried. Govts should distribute masks for those who can’t afford,” Twitter user Revathi posted on social media.
She calls it genius and later on added that Kurmayya should serve as a good example to show everyone that there are ways to keep themselves protected from COVID-19. It is a way to call the attention of people who improperly wear face masks or avoid doing so.
The number of people in India dealing with COVID-19 continues to get out of hand. According to CNN, there are 349, 691 new cases as of Saturday, part of the 16,960,172 total. The death toll stands at 192,311. Roughly 21 million people have already been vaccinated but the need to continue practicing standard COVID-19 health protocols is advised.
Like most countries, India has been dealing with a heavy burden as the pandemic continues to devastate communities and hospitals. They are short in supply of intensive care unit beds, medicine, oxygen and ventilators. Bodies are also piling up in morgues and crematoriums, forcing the local government to hold mass cremations at makeshift sites.
