A 71-year-old finds himself facing multiple charges after driving his car through a homeless encampment on Monday Morning. The man, identified as Craig Voss was reportedly driving under the tunnel of San Diego City College plaza at around 9:00 a.m. but somehow ended up driving his vehicle up and onto the sidewalk.
Three people were killed as a result of the incident and six more were injured due to the mishap. Voss remained at the scene after the incident, trying to help out those who were injured according to the police. The 71-year-old was arrested and is now facing three counts of vehicular manslaughter, five counts of causing great bodily harm and a felony DUI.
Voss was made to take a sobriety test at the scene by the police. It was not mentioned if the man was under the influence of another substance, the Associated Press reported.
The 71-year-old man is facing more charges with the investigation still ongoing. San Diego Mayor Todd Garcia confirmed that most of those hit by Voss’s car were homeless.
"They were there because they felt like they had nowhere else to go," Gloria stated in a press conference. "This crash this morning did not have to be so devastating. Let me state it very clearly, a street is not a home."
Five of the six injured were brought to the hospital for treatment. Two of them are reportedly in critical condition.
One of the people in the encampment shared that he was sleeping when he heard tires screeching and his tent spun. When he went out to take a look, Esteban Hernandez and people were already screaming for help. He tried to do his part in comforting them, admitting that knew one of the people who got injured and one that died.
As for Voss, it has yet to be known if he had legal representation and if he has already entered a plea.
