A man has been accused of ramming his vehicle into a family of five and opening fire on them with a shotgun, killing a father and his toddler on a Montana roadside on Sunday, July 17.
The assailant, identified as Derick Amos Madden, 37, from Goldsby, Oklahoma, reportedly drove his Toyota Tacoma pickup truck into a family of five as they were walking in the town of East Glacier near Glacier National Park in Montana.
Madden crashed into the family before colliding his vehicle with a tree. He then got out of the pickup wielding a shotgun and allegedly killed David Siau, 39. Madden then opened fire on the rest of the family as they fleed the scene, hitting Christy Siau, 40, and her 18-month-old daughter, McKenzie, who the mother was carrying in her hand, the Daily Beast reported.
After shooting the couple and their children, Madden then attacked David’s sister, Christina Siau, 30. Madden, after running out of ammunition, switched to using a knife and stabbed Christina. However, Christina fought for her life despite suffering critical injuries and managed to kill Madden at the scene.
Following the ordeal, McKenzie, Christy, and Christina were rushed to the Indian Health Services hospital in Browning. Unfortunately, the toddler McKenzie was declared dead at the hospital. Meanwhile, her mother Christy and aunt Christina were airlifted to another hospital for further treatment.
Madden was reported to have had mental issues in the past and had been in a prior relationship with Christina. The investigating officers described the incident as being “isolated” with “a clear nexus between the victims and Madden.” However, they added that it is not yet clear what sparked Madden’s horrific attack on his ex and her family, KOKH FOX 25 reported.
“The investigation is ongoing,” Capt. Tom Seifert of the Glacier County Sheriff’s Office said. “We still have to talk to some people and verify some things.”
Madden reportedly spent “about 10 years” serving in the Oklahoma National Guard, and was assigned to the 63rd Civil Support Team. However, Madden left the Guard on Apr. 3, 2013.
Meanwhile, Michael Mazzye, the pastor of Renovation Church in North Syracuse, who personally knew David and Christy Siau, described the couple as “caring, sweet people who are thoughtful of others.”
“I can’t imagine this horrible tragedy. It’s unthinkable,” he added.
