A man allegedly smothered his wife to death with a pillow after she made a video call to her lover in his presence in Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh, India on Monday, July 11.
The accused, Mohammed Shahnawaj, 27, and his wife Muskaan, 25, reportedly got married some four years ago. However, their relationship later turned sour. The couple has reportedly been living separately for the past two years.
However, when Muskaan recently came to her husband's residence to take custody of her son, she made a video call to her lover while her estranged ex-partner was still in the room. This angered Shahnawaj, who in a fit of rage, smothered her using a pillow and killed her, the Times Of India reported.
After the couple started living apart from each other, the couple's three-year-old son Alham began living with his paternal grandfather in the village while Shahnawaj was reportedly working as a contractual laborer at hosiery mills in Punjab. Meanwhile, Muskaan was constantly forcing him to hand over the custody of their son to her.
Muskaan, who was working at a beauty parlor in Delhi, returned to her husband's house two days before the alleged murder to take custody of their son and take him back with her.
When Shahnawaj returned home on July 11, Muskaan was still there. While Shahnawaj was in the house, Muskaan made a video call to her lover in his presence. This angered Shahnawaj and a heated argument ensued between the two.
As the confrontation escalated, Shahnawaj, in a fit of rage, allegedly smothered her using a pillow. After killing his wife, the accused, who was in an inebriated condition, went to the police station and told the officers that he had killed his wife and locked her body inside his room.
The officers responded to the crime scene, called forensic experts to collect evidence from the residence and sent the body for an autopsy. Following this, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Shahnawaj under section 302 (murder). Shahnawaj has been taken into custody.
Following the murder, the couple's son has been handed over to the child welfare committee.
