A man has been accused of killing an alleged thief by smashing a brick against the victim's head for trying to steal his phone in Jambusavari Dinne, Bangalore, India on Monday, Feb. 14.
On Monday, the accused, Sharath Kumar, 27, was reportedly talking to his mother on his phone when the 37-year-old victim, Manjunath, accompanied by two of his friends, approached him and demanded he hand over his phone to them. However, Kumar refused to comply and began walking away.
As Manjunath tried to snatch the phone from Kumar's hand, the suspect picked up a brick lying on his path and began bashing the block against the alleged thief's head. Manjunath, who suffered grievous injuries from the attack, fell unconscious and collapsed onto the ground. Even though Manjunath was rushed to a hospital for treatment, he was subsequently declared dead by doctors at the facility, the Hindu reported.
Following the violent altercation, the Konanakunte police have arrested Kumar and charged him with murder. The victim, Manjunath, reportedly worked in a bar and restaurant and was previously involved in a mobile snatching case.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 23-year-old man was allegedly tied to a tree and beaten up with sticks and iron rods in a public park until death by four men in west Delhi, India, for stealing a mobile phone in August 2020, Hindustan Times reported.
Shesh Kumar, a washerman who witnessed the crime, told the police that he saw his four neighbors assaulting the victim, identified as Rahul, alias "Dhancha," a 23-year-old resident of Jawahar Camp in Kirti Nagar. Kumar added that observed them taking the victim to a park early morning, tying him to a tree, and beating him up with sticks and iron rods.
When Kumar tried to intervene and requested them to release the victim, they did not pay heed to his pleas. They told Kumar that Rahul and his associates had stolen a mobile phone from a truck.
The four men, identified as Mushtaq Ahmed, his brother Shiraj Ahmed, Anish, and Ishtihar, fled the crime scene after the condition of the victim deteriorated. However, police offices traced them and arrested them shortly after.
