An Indian husband allegedly killed himself after feeling wracked by guilt and regret about viciously kicking his vulnerable pregnant wife in the stomach in Red Hills, Tamil Nadu, India on Thursday, Dec. 9.
The man, identified as Babu, 27, an autorickshaw driver, allegedly kicked his four-months-pregnant wife Elammal, a flower vendor by profession, in the stomach following a heated argument, some two days before he took his own life.
After the incident, Babu reportedly felt depressed as he realized the error in his actions and decided to take his own life by hanging a noose from the ceiling of his home, the Times Of India reported.
Two days before Babu killed himself, an explosive confrontation had broken out between the couple at their home in Red Hills, Tamil Nadu. During the fight, Babu, in a fit of rage, allegedly kicked his pregnant wife in the stomach. The attack left Elammal in excruciating pain as she fell to the floor, crying. After hearing the woman's screams, the duo's neighbors rushed to the house and assisted in rushing Elammal to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Following the incident, the couple's families criticized Babu for being extremely violent towards his wife. Babu, who reportedly felt guilty about his brutal actions, subsequently killed himself by fashioning a noose out of his wife's saree, a woman's garment in India.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a man allegedly shot and killed his 23-year-old pregnant wife and her toddler son before killing himself on April 18 earlier this year, New York Post reported.
David Wayne Priest, 24, from Van Buren, Arkansas, reportedly shot his wife and son to death inside the family’s apartment after an argument with his partner.
Officers rushed to the scene after a neighbor living in the other half of their duplex called 911 and informed them about the incident. Bullets from the shooting reportedly tore through his wall. One bullet even struck his headboard, right above where he and his wife had been sleeping.
After officers with the Van Buren Police Department arrived at the scene. they found Priest's wife, Paiden Nicole Priest, and her two-year-old son, Grayson Alexander Beckham, dead at the scene of fatal gunshot wounds.
Priest, who was found still alive despite his self-inflicted injury, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, he later succumbed to his fatal bullet wounds at the health facility.
“This is one of the worst cases that we’ve had to ever deal with,” Sergeant Jonathan Wear said. “But we do believe that this was done by David Priest.”
Wear added that the neighbors heard arguing coming from the couple’s apartment shortly before the shooting.
“A couple of weeks back they were all playing outside,” neighbor Sarah Beals said. She added that the family had always been “nice” and “sweet.”
