A man reportedly plunged 650 feet to his death while trying to grab a dropped cell phone on the Altar Knotto trail in Italy on Saturday, Aug. 20.

The deceased man, identified as 30-year-old Andrea Mazzetto, an entrepreneur and fitness enthusiast, was reportedly on a hike with his girlfriend, Sara Bragante, on the Altar Knotto trail in the town of Rotzo, in the province of Vicenza, Italy on Saturday, Aug.20, when their trek took a tragic turn.

During the hike, Mazzetto accidentally dropped his phone. However, while he attempted to retrieve his phone from the edge of a 300-foot ravine at around 2 p.m., he reportedly lost his balance and fell 650 feet to his death, New York Post reported. Initially, the phone was believed to have belonged to Bragante. However, it was later confirmed that it belonged to Mazzetto.

Bragante, who witnessed the incident, was left in a state of shock at the scene and immediately alerted emergency services about the incident. Emergency services dispatched a team of firefighters and alpine rescue officers, along with a medical team to the site and Mazzetto's body was recovered with the help of a helicopter, the U.S. Sun reported.

Bragante and Mazzetto are active on Instagram. The couple consistently uploaded images of their climb up the hiking trail on the day of the incident. Bragante has reportedly since deleted her account. A haunting photo was taken just moments before the tragedy, showing the couple happily posing near the edge of a 300-foot ravine.

“Our cursed last photo together,” she wrote. “You will always be with me, my little bear.”

In a similar but unrelated incident, a Wisconsin doctor who went on a solo hike reportedly fell to her death when the ground beneath her collapsed in March earlier this year, Latin Times reported.

Kelsey Musgrove, a cardiothoracic surgery fellow at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, was last heard from when she reached the Potato River Falls in Gurney on March 26. However, she failed to return from the hike and was reported missing.

The deputies reportedly found her vehicle in the parking of the trail headed to the falls. Following the discovery, the authorities launched an expansive ground, air, and water search, and Musgrove's body was finally located at 11:35 p.m. on Sunday, April 3 in an area near the Potato River Falls.

Musgrove's autopsy report revealed that she suffered traumatic injuries and died within minutes after the fall. According to the sheriff's office, Musgrove reportedly veered off the observation area at the 90-foot waterfall trying to get closer to the river.

“While walking along the edge of the embankment, it appears that the ground beneath her collapsed, bringing her down the bank along with clay and rocks,” Sheriff Paul Samardick said.
