Man Accused Of Rape Commits Suicide, Found Hanged In Hospital Toilet

A prisoner in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was under treatment at a hospital where he was later found dead. 38-year-old Ram Baran Yadav had been admitted after he fell ill at the Rae Bareli Jail. He went missing while in the hospital. He was found hanged in the district hospital’s restroom.

In March 2016 a minor girl was raped in the city of Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh. An investigation was launched after the victim’s family reported the incident. In the course of the investigation, Yadav was accused of raping the minor. He was eventually arrested nearly four years after the incident.

After being arrested in 2020, Yadav was held in Rae Bareli Jail, ABP Live reported. Since his arrest, he remained in prison, under trial.

Lastly reported that Yadav had been suffering from depression. Rae Bareli Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar stated that the accused had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for his failing mental health. Two weeks of treatment at the hospital did not improve his condition.

On Friday, July 2 Yadav fainted in prison. He was shifted to the district hospital for medical attention. He remained under treatment at the hospital till the day of the incident.

The police constables posted at the hospital to guard Yadav found him missing from his hospital room on Sunday, July 4. They started searching the hospital for the missing prisoner. Finding the door of a restroom closed, the constables knocked several times. They did not get any response from the occupant. Eventually breaking the door down they discovered Yadav’s body.

Yadav reportedly hanged himself from the window. He was declared dead. An investigation into the death has been launched and his body has been sent for post mortem examination.

Another rape accused in the north-eastern state of Agartala hanged himself last month. On June 1, the unnamed man was found hanging from a tree near his home. The man had been accused by his family of raping his 17-year-old daughter.

The family had filed a police complaint against the accused father on May 31. Before the police could act on the complaint and arrest the accused, he committed suicide. Police launched an investigation into both the rape and the suicide.
