Maite Perroni is back as the star of a new Televisa production titled "La Gata." The telenovela will be premiering soon in México and the first television promo has aired. Perroni had to transform herself into a character that lives in a landfill, with torn shoes, raggedy clothes and dirt all over. "She's tender and a savage... innocent and a warrior," says the voice-over as images of Perroni with a black cat are flashed. "Her name is Esmeralda, but they call her 'La Gata' (The Cat)." Production of the series takes place in an actual waste field in Bordo of Xochiaca in Mexico. Her on-screen love will be with the handsome Daniel Arenas, who we just finished watching as Octavio on "Corazón Indomable." The two already show tremendous chemistry and will ignite the small screen when it premieres on Univision later this year.
"La Gata" has been mixed with a Venezuelan novela titled "Rubí Rebelde" by Perla Farias to enrich the original premise. Nathalie Larthilleux, producer of the telenovela, told "Formula Espectacular" that most of the secondary characters will be from Farias story while the central storyline will be around Rodena's original. Leaving all the glamour behind from "Amores Verdaderos" isErika Buenfil who goes from a rich to rags in "La Gata." Buenfil had to darken her hair as she will be playing Perroni's mother. In this new soap, Buenfil's character looses her mind after her daughter goes missing and ends up in the landfill. The dramatic change from Victoria Balvanera shows the commitment that Buenfil has with this character. Other actors set to star are Leticia Perdigón, Patricia Pellicer, Mariluz Bermudez and Manuel Ojeda.
"La Gata" has had numerous versions produced in México with the first one produced in 1970 and starring María Rivas and Juan Ferrera. In 1983, Televisa produced another version of the Inés Rodena classic under the title of "La Fiera" with Victoria Ruffo, Guillermo Capetillo, Angélica Aragónand Rocio Banquells taking the lead roles. It was only 10 years after Ruffo's hit novela aired that another producer took a stab at recreating the success, sadly this was not the case. "Sueño de Amor" with Angélica Rivera and Omar Fierro was not the hit it was meant to be and turned out to be not so memorable. Angelli Nesma retook the classic in the year 2000 with Natalia Esperón and Victor Noriega with mixed results. With a high-profile star like Maite Perroni and Daniel Arenas coming from a hit, this new version is poised to be a success. "La Gata" is set to premiere on May 5 in México and shoult start shortly after on Univision. Watch the promo down below and tell us what you think!
