Creators of the hit "Made in Abyss" anime series revealed that a second season will be released in 2022, following its successful debut in 2017. The story will pick up after the 2020 sequel film "Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul."
What's more, “Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ogonkyo” (Made in Abyss: The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City), the second installment, will be accompanied by the launch of “Made in Abyss: Yami o Mezashita Rensei” (Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness), a new 3D action roleplaying game based on the popular manga.
The RPG will be developed by Spike Chunsoft, the company behind Dragon Quest, Danganronpa, and Jump Force. Original writer and illustrator Akihito Tsukushi will oversee the game’s full-voiced storylines.
The game will be released in 2022 on Playstation 4, Switch, and Steam with both Japanese and English dubbing. In Europe, Numskull Games, a video game publisher, will also release a physical version of the game.
While there’s no official announcement over the animation studio behind the second installment, Kinema Citrus might be back to handle its development. The company was behind the creation of the first season and its sequel film.
In the story, the "Abyss" is a massive pit and lair. It's the only uncharted place in Orth. The depths are home to relics of lost civilizations which made it a popular hunting spot for Cave Raiders, like the protagonist, Riko, who aspire to follow her mother, Lyza, in becoming a White Whistle.
Cave Raiders descend into the pit on risky missions to retrieve artifacts they can find. Riko stumbled into Reg, who is a robot that looks like a human boy, in the Abyss. She invited him into their tight-knit gang while attempting to avoid the lethal curse that plagued everyone who ventures further into the pit.
After the first season ended, "Made in Abyss: Journey's Dawn" and "Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight" was aired in 2019 which served as a movie compilation. The sequel film, "Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul" was released in January 2020, grossing approximately $1 million in its first three days.
The film was supposed to be released in April 2020 in the U.S., but it was postponed due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
