Mac users should be pleased to know that they will be able to download a free upgrade for their computer from the Apple Mac Store. The upgrade is called OS X Mavericks and is available for download today. Apple announced the OS X Mavericks upgrade at their media event on Tuesday in San Francisco. The new operating system is named for a surfing spot in northern California and will introduce a number of new features that have previously only been available on the iOS 7 operating system for iPhone and iPad.

Among the host of new apps users can download with the OS X Mavericks, the free operating system will also improve your computer and give you an extra hour of web browsing by improving the battery life. Mavericks also has improved graphics and better processing power. With the launch of the new operating system, Apple is looking to get consumers the most out of their hardware. Other features that come with the upgrade include a tabbed view to minimize windows within Finder and a Tag feature for photos and files for optimal organization.

iOS 7 users have been using iBook for years and now desktop users will be able to do the same. Using the OS X Mavericks iBooks will sync with any book purchase customers have bought through iTunes. Students using iBook will be able to cut, paste, highlight and make annotations within their texts. The notes will sync up with all Apple devices the student uses. So the student may start their work using their Mac and then switch over to the iPad without losing their place.

OS X Mavericks will also come equipped with Apple Maps, shared links, which will be available in Safari and a new feature known as AirPlay Display. The new feature for Mavericks, AirPlay Display will allow users to run Apple TV as an extra display. You will also be able to drag your windows from your Mac to your TV screen using Apple TV. The Telegraph points out that this is an inexpensive way to get a larger display for your Mac in order to watch videos and view other content.

Mavericks is compatible with any Apple computer that is running Mountain Lion, Mac's current operating system.
