The Baltimore Orioles are having their best season in two decades as the team currently stands in first place in the American League East. Much of the Orioles success can be directly attributed to their all-star third baseman, Manny Machado.
Machado, who hails from the Dominican Republic, is batting .278 with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs on the season, which has been shortened this year due to a torn ACL he suffered last season. Machado was the third overall pick for the Orioles in 2010 and was an All-Star and Gold Glove winner last season.
Machado twisted his knee and fell to the ground in pain in the second inning while grounding out to the shortstop. He was unable to run to first base on the play and was immediately carried off the field.
MRI results on Tuesday revealed that the Orioles may have dodged a tremendous bullet, as there appears to be no severe ligament damage, but rather a ligament sprain as originally thought.
Baltimore’s general manager Dan Duquette told the Baltimore Sun that most likely the disabled list would be an option. For now, the team plans to see how Machado feels in the next few days and if necessary place him on the 15-day DL retroactive August 12th.
Machado is crucial to Baltimore’s World Series title hopes and the city and their fans are hoping that Machado can bounce back sooner than later as it appears the Orioles playoff push will come down to the wire as they stand only five games ahead of the second place Toronto Blue Jays.
