Luis Fernando Salazar Fernandez, a Mexican senator for the state of Coahuila under the National Action Party or PAN, made waves on Twitter this week when he was shown abdicating his post. The senator was photographed last Monday sleeping during a meeting in which the country's newest measures on education and gender equality when it comes to social services were read and voted upon. During the meeting, the crucial Professional Teacher Service Act was passed, sparking outrage and even a slew of jokes from constituents on social media.
Salazar Fernandez responded to the claims with outrage of his own, firing back that the photo was taken out of context after he reviewed the images himself. "The photos that is circulating is out of context," he said on Twitter. "I requested the video of the session. I will put it up on my page." He went on to say that the photo was merely shot at an inoprtune time and actually caught him blinking while leaning in his chair, not sleeping. He used other photos as support for his claim, which depict him conversing with other senators prior to the vote. "In a few hours, the full video of the session will be available online where any interested party may view it and can verify that this photo is circumstantial and taken out of context," he said.
