Fans and supporters of Luigi Mangione have expressed shock and horror at Attorney General Pam Bondi's directive for the Department of Justice to seek the death penalty against the 26-year-old for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
"Mangione's murder of Brian Thompson -- an innocent man and father of two young children -- was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America," Bondi said in a statement on Tuesday. "After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump's agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again."
Supporters of Mangione rushed to social media to voice their outrage at Bondi's announcement, stating their belief that execution was too harsh a penalty and reiterating support for Mangione. Many stated that they believed the punishment was too harsh for the alleged crime.
"Mind you they don't even do this for actual criminals. Like rapists, child predators, school shooters, etc.," one user commented.

Mangione is accused of murdering Thompson in Manhattan in December 2024, with him being identified as a suspect and arrested less than a week after the murder. Federal charges were filed against Mangione within the same month.
"As alleged, Mangione planned his attack for months and stalked his victim for days before murdering him -- methodically planning when, where, and how to carry out his crime," Biden administration Attorney General Merrick Garland said at the time.
Following Thompson's death, social media and online platforms were filled with users sharing their personal experiences with the American healthcare industry and how loved ones or they themselves were denied claims for lifesaving care. UnitedHealthcare customers in particular shared many of their experiences with the company online.
After Mangione was identified as the suspect and arrested, he developed a large group of supporters online. Thousands of dollars have been raised for the 26-year-old's legal defense since.
